Our Mission
-
Snakes evolved from lizards about 135 million years ago and have adapted to various habitats across the world, including different regions of India.
-
Habitat destruction and human encroachment have led to increased human-snake conflicts, causing a rise in snakebite incidents, especially in agricultural and forested areas.
-
Fear of snakebites has resulted in the killing of major venomous snake species, making it difficult to produce Anti-Snake Venom (ASV), the only treatment for snakebite victims.
-
To address this crisis, two national initiatives, Mission Snake Bite Death Free India and Sarp Shiksha Abhiyan, focus on education and awareness through training programs, campaigns, and social media.
-
The impact of these efforts is evident in reduced snakebite cases, shifting public perception from killing snakes to coexistence, and the global observance of World Snake Awareness Day on April 11.

What We Achieved
Through extensive awareness programs, Mission Snake Bite Death Free India and Sarp Shiksha Abhiyan have significantly reduced snakebite deaths, as evidenced by hospital and police records. Public perception has shifted from fear-based killing to coexistence, leading to increased conservation efforts. Nationwide training for forest staff, defense personnel, police, medical professionals, and students has enhanced snakebite management and response. Additionally, real-time data collection from various states has improved medical preparedness, addressing Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) shortages. The mission’s impact has gained global recognition with the establishment of World Snake Awareness Day on April 11, further strengthening snake conservation efforts worldwide.
